What’s this then?
The Mercian summer holiday this year is going to be in Cornwall. We thought we’d save money and hassle by avoiding flights, car hire, car insurance, and airport parking, and instead go to one of the best climbing destinations in the UK. Crikey, I'm excited already.

There’s so much to do in Cornwall. Trad galore, including a huge array of granite sea cliffs of all grades (Chair Ladder, Sennen, Bosigran, Land’s End), and some cliffs that don’t need an abseil rope to access them. Add to that endless miles of walking and running on the South-west coastal path, swimming in the ocean, cycling (hillier than you might expect), paddleboarding, and cream teas. There is room for 16 Mercians.

Where are we staying?
The house we have booked is located in Porthcurno, which is great for our needs. A five minute walk to a sandy beach and the historic Minack Theatre (Google it!), and a few km walk (or short drive)| to some fabulous climbing. We've booked a 16 bed house:

The price is £260 per person for the 7 nights (£37 per person per night) arriving on Saturday the 4th July, and departing Saturday the 11th. Priority will be given to members paying for all nights, then to non-members paying for all nights.

How much will it cost (deposit and balance)?
A deposit of £150 needs to be paid to me (Stewart Moody), not to the club account. To guarantee your space the deposit needs to be paid on or before Friday 5th December. If you don't pay your deposit by then your place will go to next reserve. The balance (a further £110) will need to be paid on or before 15th May 2026.

What are the sleeping arrangements?
You can read the details on the AirB&B website (see link above). In summary, there are 6 bedrooms, including 4 double beds, and assorted singles and bunks spread throughout the rooms. Most have an en suite. So it’s not really any different to a hut meet. We need to see who signs up first to see if 4 double beds poses any problems, but we Mercian's usually make things work.

What if I want to camp instead?
Fill your boots. There are plenty of campsites in Cornwall and you can meet up with folk during the days. This should be researched and booked independently by you.

What if the trip isn’t fully subscribed, will it be cancelled?
This booking will go ahead if we have a minimum of 14 people sign up and pay deposita for all 7 nights, in which case the total cost will be £297 per person (£42 per person per night). If we have deposits from fewer than 13 people by the 10th of January all deposits will be refunded, the house booking will be cancelled, and we’ll switch to a camping format instead (the committee will designate a camp site and you will be expected to book yourself on if you wish to join the trip).
